04 Nov Method for designing a logo in five steps
As experts in logo design, we are always looking to share our knowledge. To help our readers, today we will share a step-by-step method for designing a logo.
Logo design is an essential skill for any graphic designer. After all, a brand’s logo is crucial to its identity and image. That is why a brand will likely spend considerable time developing a logo design that they find satisfactory. Following this process, you can design a logo that will meet your requirements.
Research thoroughly
Before you begin working on a design, it is crucial that you do sufficient research into the market, the brand and the industry. This research will give you a better sense of what kind of environment the brand exists in and where the brand will use the logo.
Understanding the style and trends relevant to your client is essential to developing a good logo. You can look at competitors in the market and see what commonalities they have, what you should keep and where you should differentiate your logo from the market. Ideally, your logo should stand out without being so different that it confuses the audience.
Study the client
When you do your research, you should pay attention to learning about your client. The more a designer understands the brand they are working for, the better they will be able to inject that brand’s image into the logo. Start by asking for a briefing from the client about their brand, goals and target market. You may have to ask for more details and clarifications to fully understand the client and find out how they differ from their competition. That will be worth it when you begin the actual design, though.
Present samples
Try giving your clients multiple samples when you start working on potential ideas. Keep the options limited to two or three options, though. That allows you to work on multiple ideas you think they might like and makes it easier to make revisions on all of them without being overburdened.
Make revisions
Once they give you their feedback, start making revisions and fine-tuning the logos to get closer to the vision they have in mind. These revisions may be relatively small, or the client could dislike the options, and you may have to start from scratch. If you have done your research well, you can reduce the chances of restarting from scratch.
Deliver the logo
Once your client is satisfied with the logo design, you will need to present the variations of the logo and the correct file formats to the client. These variations are based on the logo but adapted to other uses, such as merchandising and other promotional activities.
With this step-by-step method for designing a logo, you should now be able to begin designing a logo for your brand. It can be a challenging process that requires diligent research, creative thinking and learning to understand your clients, their industry and trends. However, it is an essential aspect of a designer’s role and being proficient in it will serve you well.
